I read a lot of articles from lots of sources including the NYT, WAPO, and the WSJ. When I want to "poke the beast" I write comments on their climate articles. A complete waste of time, I know, but it lets me interact with "typical readers" of these MSM outlets.
The IGNORANCE around the Climate Crisis is STUNNING.
When you spend most of your time talking with other "crisis aware" people it's easy to forget how LITTLE your "average citizen" knows about climate change or climate science. Because half of America considers teaching climate science in high school to be "woke, leftist, indoctrination". Your average high school graduate knows more about sex, drugs, and video games than they do about the changes in the global climate system that will determine IF they even have a future.
What's truly awful, is that high school is the LAST TIME most people are required to systematically learn about the world around them. After high school learning about any topic becomes optional and most don't make an effort.
Instead, almost all of what they "learn" about, well everything, will be by osmosis. Bits and pieces of information picked up incidentally from movies, novels, magazine articles, and conversations.
What I find in talking to people on MSM outlets. Is that even people who are CONCERNED about the climate and fearful about what they see happening around them, still know next to nothing other than what people like Hannah Ritchie and Michael Mann say. Basically that things are getting worse, BUT we still have 40-50 years before it gets "serious". They truly believe that the progress made on renewables and EV's is "turning the tide" and that once we get to NET ZERO all will be well.
And those are the "good people" who are trying to be informed and are concerned for the future. The level of ignorance among the MAGAts is beyond stupidity and deliberate refusal to learn anything. They have chosen to believe in a completely alternate reality. They have created an alternate world of evidence and "scientists" that they cling tightly to and will not be challenged on.
Some of them will have "conversion experiences" as our world begins to change around them. However, a LOT of them will go to their death's insisting that "climate change" like covid, is a hoax.
They are going to take the rest of us down with them. Mostly out of spite.
I, too, read a lot of articles from those sources and others. I cancelled the NYT, L.A. Times, WaPo is expiring, and I refuse to pay for the WSJ, or Bloomberg. I read their free email newsletters, which give me at least a pulse on their distortion. While the former three have occasionally published some excellent articles on climate change (overshoot not so much), their overall timidity has soured me. None of them communicate the gravity of our situation, and with the attack on non-profit funding, I am putting my money behind less mainstream resources like ProPublica, Common Dreams, Axios, The Grist, etc., and try to promote writers here doing good work on these issues. I encourage my readers to look at my recommendations, and you of course are one of them.
The depth of public ignorance is stunning. I don’t often participate in the comments sections of these publications, but do ask the average Joe and Mary when I’m out and about on weekly errands. My informal questions are truly disheartening in their lack of knowledge and awareness. To be fair, when I took all of this up three years ago, although I had a general feeling of dread, it’s only through hundreds of hours of research or more that I could back up my gut, and be prepared to back up what I learned. Most people don’t have the time to devote to this kind of work, and obviously the nightly news is for the most part useless.
You’re correct that at the heart a lot of this is a failure of education. Too many have not been inoculated to withstand the lies of Fox, Brietbart, and the Alex Jones's and Rush Limbaugh's of this world. It’s not just a refusal to learn, it’s unfounded arrogance that they think they know it all. In any case, fearful times. It's a toxic mix that can't play out well.
Same in UK, it's like the public school journos in the Guardian writing yet another article wagging their fingers at the great unwashed telling them to pay for long life halogen or whatever the latest lightbulb is - it really is head in hands stuff.
>What's truly awful, is that high school is the LAST TIME most people are required to systematically learn about the world around them. After high school learning about any topic becomes optional and most don't make an effort.
and highschool is a looong time ago for most people. who have been scrolling since
Hi Richard, you are spot on. The 'woke mind virus' of climate change, gender ideology and authoritarian measures over 'covid' were deliberately created and funded by Republicans, Musk, big fossil fuel and animal ag (and big pharma of course) to create the backlash against the non existent 'woke globalist communists' and back towards 'family values'. Have you seen Musk dressed as a gladiator posing on his own platform saying he's fighting the 'woke mind virus'? It is a the perfect epitome of the mess we're in.
The (justified) 'covid' dissenters were deliberately targeted with ridiculing of environmentalists plus nonsense climate change denial from Jordan Peterson et al. I've been watching and documenting it since Spring 2020. In 2019 veganism was gaining ground- hence the 'covid' lockdowns were linked by industry funded Heartland Institute in The Hill and elsewhere to dairy free 15 minute cities and climate lockdowns by the WEF.
They now say we must all get behind 'anti-war' Trump and Farage, though we might not like them, to avoid WWIII. They've fallen for the propaganda yet again.
Is the insidiously easy way that algorithms in their dumbest states, can chase the lowest common denominator on the web & push the floaters to the cultish sargasso of scum without oxygen to the top, (where it's easy to scrape the layer of sludge containing the utterly idiotic gobbledegook spouted by people such as Peterson), that could be intellectually picked apart by any bright thinking, logically minded student.
Saul money n power innit - & I hasten to add, (forgive me for sounding sexist), but a lot of the time it seems to be the same old variety of billybigb@ll ox & his fluctuating testosterone levels.... caveat emptor #me too... - I have to shave my chin everyday, either that or look like a mandarin after a week (& not the tangerine kind).
If I was religious I would say *lord give me strength* - as I'm not - it just makes me wanna bop someone on the nose.
This is a chilling piece but reading it makes me feel less alone. I have been surrounded by religious conservatives for a majority of my life and they would gaslight me frequently.
Unfortunately, there is so much to be chilled about. Even under so-called liberal leadership, climate and overshoot have been woefully under addressed. It's not enjoyable researching and writing this stuff, but other than independent voices like mine, I don't see anyone addressing reality. We have no chance unless enough people understand the physical truths of the planet, and the charade that's going on.
I do not believe that the oligarch class are unaware of climate change, much as they say they do. Rather, I suspect they are doing disaster prep by stockpiling and expecting to survive by insulating themselves with our dollars, atop a heap of our bones.
And it won't make any difference. It won't even take the long term at the current rate.
Back in the 90s I thought that if nothing changed, high tech civilization would collapse within a century or so. Around 2020, I thought maybe 50 years. Now I think I can see it in the headlights. Maybe 20 years or so, if that. (I'm in my late 60s and have seen the climate changes in my own lifetime.)
Humans have a real problem seeing and reacting to long term threats. Unless some vanishingly unlikely event(s) change our trajectory, my kids and grandkids will live in a dying world.
A therapist friend of mine says climate change is a huge topic in her practice. It's various lyrics called eco-anxiety, climate trauma, ecological grief, and solastalgia. Many of us see and feel what's happening. There's little if any time left.
Unfortunately, it's not just high-tech civilization that will collapse, it's civilization, period. Hundreds of millions will be displaced, and resource wars are a reality. That saber-rattling coming from Trump about Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal should be taken seriously. Russia, China and the US will be competing for resources in the thawing Arctic. When I wrote about Biden opening drilling in Alaska, the Willow Project, I found all kinds of military documents supporting this.
You are absolutely correct, we are not built to deal with long-term threats.
It must be tough being a therapist now. I don't know how you could treat climate change and overshoot grief. It's depressingly real, not an emotional or behavioral problem to get to the root of.
Oh, I do take it seriously. Geopolitics is a very complicated game and I'm no expert. Even those who are aren't sure where this is all going yet, except for poor Ukraine. 😢
I honestly don't know how to evaluate whether civilization will fall entirely. That's why I limited myself to high tech civilization. Of course, if WW III breaks out (as the evangelicals so desperately want to happen), all bets are off.
I honestly don't know how my friend deals with it. It can't be easy. I know that many therapists have therapists themselves. 😔
Geoff, we share your angst at the rolling coup unleashed by the 4M of us Dem voters in the last Biden victory, who chose not to showup this time, and allowed a madman to prevail by default. You/we are not alone. May God help us.
This has been a long time in the making. Starting in Chile, neoliberal economics rolled over virtually every country in the world. Reagan kicked it off here, it's just now reached full bloom here. The dead of heart eat their own, too.
And now the rot of neoliberalism is being used to swing the electorate right into Trump, Reform and the AfD. Like being ruled by oligarchs is better than being ruled by oligarchs via government.
The speed of this coup is probably startling to most, but in truth it's been building since the election of Reagan and encouraged to fester and grow under democrat administrations as well. It's hit critical mass and is exploding in our faces now. Few are equipped to weather even this preliminary onslaught, and we're far from the worst to come.
It is quite incredible. Part of me is wanting to say ‘I told you so’ having watched its recent acceleration since 2020. But it’s the most hollow thing to have been ‘in the know’ that it was coming.
Hell, I could see the hollowness as a teen, and feel its unsustainability. I regret not jumping into the fray much earlier. This is no time for regrets, though.
The dropsite article makes a good case for the vulnerabilities and tinkering, and Palast whom I have read makes even more explicit comments. Unfortunately, the odds of an investigation are nil, with Trump owning the DoJ now. We have what we have, and frighteningly without massive organized risky resistance, our always flawed democracy is lost. Let's hope the protests that took place on President's Day are the beginning of organized, persistent resistance.
Thus is the new world order according to the neo-liberal think-tanks such as Heritage Foundation, who have created the new frame for any political discourse. And certainly not something any thinking person would support who has any concern for actual human survival. Sweeping most wealth to the few exaggerates planet-wide extraction of anything of any value, leaving wastelands and poverty. Defunding the "lower classes" actually denies overall economic growth. See: https://charleshughsmith.substack.com/p/the-problem-with-money-isnt-money
Thank you. Hopefully my rants wake a few people up. There are, but need to be many more doing the same, and uniting in action. Even , perhaps, “strange bedfellows.”
Thank you for writing. It is an act of courage these days. Anger is an addictive desease that feeds more anger. We all have non-violent ways we can make a difference. To do nothing is criminal when criminals like Trump and his cronies are taking illegal actions and remain above the law. This meant attending the Not My President protests this week and having them appear in the local media. Did it make a difference- no single action will. I want to take my anger and put it to use.
We’re in an environment now where speaking truth is truly dangerous, but not speaking truth guarantees an unacceptable outcome. Between the fascist movement gaining strength in so many countries and the refusal to unite against the assault on the planet, ultimately billions are in peril. Climate change is well ahead of schedule, the computer models have fallen short of reality. I feel a responsibility to warn, and thank you for participating in the protests. People in the streets is a necessary component in the fight, and yes, it’s going to take many more such actions. We must put our anger, and fear to work.
Thank you for your writing, it helps keep my own thoughts together. In this case, the photograph you used and captioned "Guantánamo Bay." is a photograph of Lynndie England at Abu Graib, and yes, of course Obama didn't want us to see them. Thanks again for your work!
Thank you for both saying my writing is helpful in some way, and calling out my error on the appalling Abu Graib photo. I’ve used it before, should have remembered that. Appreciated.
Your writing helps the medicine go down. It could be a good thing that it's such a bad thing. People aren't so passive anymore. They are agitated as never before -- and don't know what to do. That's okay enough, as we are fomenting for action. There's more of us and growing all the time. We aren't a brainwashed population. I vote it comes to a breakthrough for sanity.
Can't we have a coup? No need for guns in this electronic age. Get all living Presidents to declare it. Or however. The rule of law is admirable, but when they pay no never mind to it aren't we suckers to do things by the books?
Well, I hope my writing helps in some way. It's tough love and probably rough on many. If it's a "good" thing, it's because people are starting to realize their backs are to the wall. Even those who don't understand, the health of the planet is the ultimate decider can find common ground as Trump and Musk take actions that are going to shatter the economy, and put people out on the street. The rule of law doesn't apply when it is written and enforced for oppressors.
What is really getting my goat is being told by the mainstream alternative media that we might not like them but getting behind Trump and Farage is essential to avoid WWIII because Trump is engaged in 'peace talks' with Putin. What a load of absolute bullshit. They are not peace talks, merely talks. Russia will grind on until Ukraine is denazified, the Donbass under Russian control and Zelensky has gone. Unless Trump can do that himself it's all just hot air. Trump has also made clear that he wants to steal 50% of Ukraine's mineral rights- just because. Just like he wants to turn Gaza into a holiday camp for Whites. He's not a peace maker, he's just a mad megalomaniac who thinks he can have want he wants just by saying it.
There is no appetite for war in the UK despite Starmer posing in camouflage gear. He's being used as a puppet to swing the voters towards Farage, Reform and the Handmaid's tale. Many of the 'covid' dissenters and pro-Palestinians in alt media have fallen for it. It makes me sick.
BIDEN and HARRIS mandated this poison. They mandated for colleges, the military, etc. They were the killing machines in charge. Trump stopped the mandates. Democrats were in charge of the biggest Genocide known to man. The demanded businesses be closed, and broke people. Talk about denial. Biden and Harris are as evil as they come, and should have gone done for mass genocide. Unbelievable how the left's brain works. You want us to believe people who believe a man with a penis, can have children, if he throws a dress on. Yes!! That's who I will believe.
I never saw that "duck and cover" picture at the end. If "duck and cover" was so important for protection, why were the teachers - the adults who would have responsibility for those children after a nuclear attack that "duck and cover" would protect them from - not ducking and covering themselves?
When I started writing here, it was all about climate change. However, the genocide in Gaza forced me to write about that as well. The resulting police crackdown on speech on college campuses is also instructive for those protesting the lethal assault on our planet. These are extremely dark times, with the capacity to exceed the horrors of WWI and WWII. Retaining human rights is a never ending, cyclical battle, now profoundly amplified by the reality of dwindling oil, and the compromised life support system of our planet.
You’re an insufferable liberal who doesn’t understand the first thing about what’s really going on. You just can’t everything to be black and white, good guys czar bad guys. It’s not like that. There are no good guys. Dems are just as evil, conniving and manipulative as the GOP is. It’s people like you who don’t see the truth who are the problem. It’s not people who voted their conscience and that includes people who could t vote for either main candidate.
Grow up, realize you’re wrong and start actually helping.
If you could read without preconceptions, I called out both liberals and conservatives. I clearly stated climate change isn’t political. Try reading it again, Twinkie brain.
Oh dear, Shawnda, where did you get your “insufferable liberal” tripe? Does FAUX News send you a coloring book monthly? Time to crawl back under your rock, MAGAT.

Yoda: "hmpf ... Anger, he has!
Anger leads to hate…hate leads to suffering.
Anger, fear, aggression.
The Dark Side are they.
Once you start down the Dark path forever will it dominate your destiny."
I agree we live in dark times. Murderous times. Times where genocide is widely acceptable Too many.
Finding your light as critical, isn’t it?
When I started writing here, it was all about climate change. However, the genocide in Gaza forced me to write about that as well. The resulting police crackdown on speech on college campuses is also instructive for those protesting the lethal assault on our planet. These are extremely dark times, with the capacity to exceed the horrors of WWI and WWII. Retaining human rights is a never ending, cyclical battle, now profoundly amplified by the reality of dwindling oil, and the compromised life support system of our planet.
Yes
They bring death, i bring life. Might be an overstatement, but i’m just being poetic.
