Venus, pictured not Earth. Let’s not make Venus our fate.
As the second brightest object in our night sky after the moon, Venus is easy to see with the naked eye. She is of course, named after the Roman God of love and beauty. The second planet away from the sun, Venus is nearly as big as Earth, 7,521 miles across, versus 7,926. There, the similarities end, however. The surface temperature on Venus hovers at nearly 900 degrees Fahrenheit.
Formed at about the same time as the Earth and a similar distance from the sun, circumstantial evidence suggests that Venus might well have been an inhabitable world, much like Earth, a billion years ago. It appears a runaway greenhouse effect turned all the surface water into vapor, which then leaked into space. Today, the atmosphere of Venus is made up almost completely of carbon dioxide (CO2). It’s clouds are made of sulfuric acid.
As published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), just days ago, before the Industrial Revolution, CO2 levels on Earth were around 280 parts per million (ppm) for 6,000 years of human civilization. Since then, we have generated an estimated 1.5 trillion tons of CO2 pollution, warming the planet. Much of that CO2 will continue to warm our atmosphere for thousands of years to come.
CO2 levels are now nearly 421 ppm, a 50% increase in a little over 100 years, compared to our entire 6,000 year “civilized” existence.
In the 1970s, Exxon invested heavily in climate change research both in the atmosphere and the ocean. Their findings indisputably revealed overwhelming evidence of wildly increasing CO2 and climate change. Exxon knew about climate change nearly 40 years ago. The other players in the fossil fuel industry knew, too.
They created a massive public disinformation campaign that convinced the public, and in turn Congress, to vote down the 1998 Kyoto Protocol, an international climate treaty that could have been the start of averting disaster today. Although numerous nations participated, oil industry disinformation, particularly Exxon, persuaded China, the biggest emitter of greenhouse gasses and the U.S., the second biggest emitter not to join.
In April, the Biden administration announced it would resume selling leases for new oil and gas drilling on public lands. The Interior Department stated it planned to auction off leases to drill on 145,000 acres in nine states. Biden has so far approved roughly 2,100 drilling applications since taking office, with New Mexico and Wyoming leading in approvals, according to the Associated Press.
In India, home to one billion people, relentless, life-threatening heat is scorching the country daily, with new records. Temperatures have ranged from 110 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Forty percent of the population has no access to air conditioning. Last year, the journal Lancet Planetary Health concluded that as many as 700,000 annual deaths in India between 2000 and 2019 can be attributed to exposure to abnormal temperatures. Those condition’s are worse this year than ever before. Poor settlements have to buy water from government tankers, because tap water isn’t available. They stand in long lines for hours to purchase water to survive. Demand for electricity is outstripping resources and power cuts are being implemented. Many of the power plants depend on coal, the filthiest of all global warming fossil fuels. The blazing heat is stunting wheat production and fires are increasing.
Here in the U.S. we are seeing similar conditions in our southwestern states, where critical drinking and agricultural water supplies are imperiled, as is the electrical grid, heavily dependent on the hydro power of dams. It’s only a short matter of time that conditions in these states rival India, today.
Distressingly, Joe Biden isn’t the only one failing to grasp the implications of more oil drilling. Boris Johnson approved the Jackdaw oil field in the North Sea just days ago for Shell oil. Production is estimated at 250 million barrels a day. In Canada, the Norwegian company, Equinor, is proposing a giant oil drilling project called Bay du Nord off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, estimated to produce 73 million barrels a day.
These projects are likely political cover, as gasoline prices surge and drive inflation across the economy. However, these projects will have no effect on current economic conditions, as the oil won’t come on line for years. This is about elections and unquenchable oil industry greed, that will ensure the death of thousands or millions in the future.
Although the oil industry greatly favors Republicans, Biden received nearly one million dollars from oil interests during his presidential campaign, including from Exxon and Chevron. Oil companies grease all the wheels.
Earlier, when Biden attempted to pause new leases on federal lands, twenty-nine House lawmakers came forward to oppose him. The twenty-nine received a combined $13.4 million over their careers from fossil fuel interests and $23.6 million from energy and natural resources interests. Republicans Kevin McCarthy (Minority Leader) and Steve Scalise (Minority Whip), were the top recipients of oil and gas donations at $2.1 million and $1.8 million respectively, with total career contributions from fossil fuel interests of $3.8 million and $2.7 million. Democrat Joe Manchin’s career has been financed by the coal industry and he alone is responsible for blocking the critical lifesaving environmental legislation, Build Back Better.
I’m not a fan of unsubstantiated conspiracy theories. However, we know conspiracies happen. In my lifetime I have seen the fabricated story that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (international teams of weapons inspectors proved he did not), Watergate (no explanation necessary) and the second Gulf of Tonkin incident (that never happened) creating a pretext to invade Vietnam. Often, perhaps most of the time, the public is given half truths at best, through media owned by the elite wealthy and a revolving door of incestuous political leaders, lobbyists and CEOs. Unfathomable money exchanges hands and deals are made we have no clue of. If you check the links in this article you will see everything from liberal to conservative sources, as I try to discern truth.
There are some indisputable facts. With these facts and knowledge of history and human behavior, you can logically extrapolate what is likely going on. Global warming is real and an existential threat to our survival; the perpetrators covered it up for as long as they could; coordinated political action to curb the threat isn’t taking place; and it’s business as usual as the fossil fuel industry forges ahead, aided by both blatant and hidden corruption in our courts and political system. These paths can only lead to destruction.
So, why would the power brokers choose these paths?
Imagine for a moment you are omnipotent for all practical purposes on this Earth. You have amassed wealth and power that only a handful of your peers can rival. You don’t relate to common people, you have never lived as one. You dole out just enough of your wealth to keep the citizenry from rising up and are expert at keeping them in turmoil, distrusting each other for their skin color, sexual orientation, political affiliation, accents, religious beliefs—whatever is expedient at the moment. You have been downgrading their expectations generation after generation, most have no idea what a pension plan is, that was two generations ago. You have successfully delayed the minimum wage year after year, and laughed that they would beg for a wage that would at best, keep them in poverty, proof of how successfully you’ve lowered their expectations.
You know that government assistance programs to the poor like Medicaid, are really corporate welfare programs, that enable you to avoid providing health insurance for fifty percent of the population that lives with “at will” employment. In spite of your utter lack of humanity, you have convinced the populace that you are a philanthropist, and that anyone in America can be wealthy beyond their dreams, by working hard. You laugh your ass off that even the poorest who struggle all their lives, believe this myth. Obviously, if they’re that stupid they don’t belong in your orbit.
They’re exhausted by the survival mode have put them in, so don’t have the reserves to rise up. Even if they did, half wouldn’t because you have brainwashed them so expertly, that they think your matrix is all there is. That’s why you advertise to them constantly. Sure, it makes you more wealthy, but more importantly it controls their minds and solidifies your power. You have brainwashed them into desiring things that steer them from freedom and happiness. Every purchase they make is a new link in the chains of bondage you forge. If that fifty percent who saw the truth, rose up, it wouldn’t matter. Only a small percentage would act and your brainwashed police force would lock them away. Every time they shoot a black man in the back, you know you own them, too.
You have bought the political leaders, they are your tools. Like the common people, you give them just enough to control them. In their case it can’t be crumbs. It’s hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, if they’re particularly useful. If one of them has a pang of conscience and most of them don’t, because they are just as ruthless as you, you will ruin them. You can pick up the phone and tell the President of the United States how it’s going to be, any time you want.
You own the media and know the value of half truths. You just have to make it seem real. Some of the media is “liberal” some of it is “conservative.” You don’t really care, because your buddies are all playing the same game. It’s divide and conquer. You’re a club that would cut each other’s throats.
You’ve kept the poor, poor and convinced the population freedom is the end of a gun. They even shoot each other for you, while you tighten the noose. The preposterous conspiracy theories that spawn without your help, are particularly amusing. After all, YOU are the conspiracy, lol. More division is always favorable. You have absolutely no respect for people so dumb that they fall for your propaganda.
It’s all worked wonderfully well, but there’s a problem that demands a new chapter in the game. You’ve seen it coming for decades and have been laying the groundwork for a huge step that’s going be messy, but necessary. You have controlled every natural resource on the Earth since the Industrial Revolution and know you have played that card to the end. Everything is dying and even you, could die from climate change. So, further change has to happen.
Fortunately, the solution is incredibly easy. Do nothing.
As the planet burns and floods, as waves of epidemics flourish, as desperate climate refugees without jobs, food or shelter become millions, then billions, when they are killing each other in the streets and the population is reduced to your satisfaction, you will sweep in to save those who remain. You will be God. They will be so desperate they will accept any terms. You can chip them and put them to work in an orderly fashion and finally have a small, controllable populace to serve your needs. Your life will be so much simpler and you will have created utopia, an end to suffering and fighting.
The only thing left will be to finish consolidating your power against your few remaining rivals. Let’s see, there are the Murdock’s, the Bush’s, the Rockefeller's, the Clinton’s, the Morgan’s, Bill Gates, Larry Page, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. A couple of your foes were vanquished in The Great Dying which you are cleverly presenting as God’s will for people being bad. Guilt is one of the tools in your box, too.
Amusingly, Trump was swept off of Mar-a-Lago during a hurricane in his golf cart. It was a mask free flight. He was never a player anyhow, just a pawn in your grand scheme, way too stupid to be a rival. Remarkably, he survived the his ninety mile airlift to Cuba, later to be found dead in the embrace of Raúl Castro. Mark Zucherburg was eaten by zombie Proud Boys, which even you found a bit disgusting, after they overwhelmed his security force. Fortunately, they found his head, so identification was easy.
It’s a new day in the New World Order and life is good.
I don't enjoy being dark, but I feel most people are either in denial, or oblivious to how serious and immediate the effects of global warming are. The southwest is in deep trouble and if it goes, it will take the entire economy with it. Collapse and extinction of the natural world is accelerating. The scientists are scared. I'm dismayed by the lack of urgency in the media. I hope I am absolutely wrong about my dreary picture. I would love to be proven a fool. Thank you for reading. I'm going to try to lighten up in the next one.
And overturning Citizens United, broken labor organizing laws, undermined antitrust legislation... sure, easy-peasy!
