Riding Dinos?

MAGA gets their education off TV. They grew up watching the "Flintstones" and thought it was reality TV. Just like the "Apprentice" with Trump. "I seen it on TV! It must be true!"

Everybody should start with eating their credit cards. It would be a good beginning to "Eat the Rich". The good news is that when agriculture completely collapses there's going to be plenty of plastic leftovers to keep going. Real recycling! I might start a website on plastic recipes for the ag collapse. "Dashboard stew". sounds great!

Your sarcasm is well justified. Perhaps a Nurse Nikki inflatable will cheer you up.

Thank you for the sobering, depressing, but true data feed from various sources. Trump and his destructive, capitalist drive is proposing rescinding the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program—no accountability to billionaires and their investors worldwide. When the fossil fuel industry falls, they will find ways to continue squeezing the earth's resources! WE need the rebellion now.

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

Never in my life did I think I would call for rebellion, but both parties have failed us, bought lock, stock and barrel by AIPAC and fossil fuels. An Earth we can inhabit is at stake. My research indicates fossil fuels will be done in four decades. I've touched on this frequently of late. The entire Earth extractive economy must and will end one way or another. The smartest people warned us five decades ago. Writing this stuff isn't enjoyable, but is necessary.

Thanks, Geoffrey, for keeping us informed. It’s hard to believe that there is 5 to 50 times the microplastics in glass bottled drinks than those in plastic bottles. Damn good to know.

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

Definitely a shocker. It's only one study, but certainly should be taken seriously. Got a black coffee maker? Ditch it. Black plastic seems to be the worst of the lot.

Walt Svirsky's avatar

So I’ve heard. Ditched my black plastic utensils a while back when I heard that.

We do indeed live in the Plasticene. I'm pretty sure with or without rebellion, we're finished. Rebellion is a nice fantasy but it couldn't save us even if it were possible, which it's not (it's hard enough to get my neighborhood to agree on anything & coordinate their efforts, much less 8 billion fractious humans). Have you read Lyle Lewis's "Racing to Extinction"? - he also just started a substack. He lays it out beautifully.

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

I have not read Racing to Extinction. Sadly, I have little time for books these days trying to keep up with the most current events. I agree with you and the sentiment of the book title. With 7 of 9 planetary boundaries breached and CO2 pollution accelerating I think we're cooked. I already called the Arctic and Greenland ice sheet tipped, even if the climate scientists and IPCC won't.

Every day I ask myself how my work needs to evolve in face of the catastrophes that are just getting under way. Thanks for the heads-up on Lewis.

Ah, Geoffrey, as you know from my team’s substack on Our New Reality The Plasticene, you’re just scraping the surface of how disastrous this is. And how nobody is held accountable for poisoning all 8.2 billion of us humans. Sigh.

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

One could write endlessly on this subject and so many other threats, but I hope I did better than scrape the surface. I felt I covered a lot of ground and at least gave a decent overview with a wealth of links for those inclined to dig further. Is there an aspect you wish I dug into further? Any number of the bullet points could be made its own essay.

Remarkable how if a crime is big enough, no one is held accountable.

elba's avatar

Oh, gosh not suggesting at all you were being superficial, just emphasizing the complexity of the subject! As I hope you know, we at The Plasticine tackle this as a public health issue, so I'm delighted you're looking at some of the other aspects of this bloody toxic mess.

Could even do a guest post for us..?

And yes, " if a crime is big enough, no one is held accountable." - time for that to be changed!!!!!

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

I'd be happy to do a guest post for you. Just suggest a topic. Perhaps focusing on one of the bullet points from my article in detail?

elba's avatar

Sputtering note from medic colleague in response re: subject for your guest post - he points out there's growing business in supposed treatments to "rid the body of plastics". Costs $15,000. Big in LA! OTOH he's seeing Txs for toxicity which ignore the cause.

Liike your bullet point re Cleveland Clinic, risk sounds ridiculously downplayed, especially this

"“If you aren’t able to reduce your plastic use, it’s not something that you should panic about,” he reassures. “The best thing you can do is be more cognizant about it. But it’s not something that’s going to lead to an acute medical emergency.” looks like there's some sort of private healthcare/wellness make-money scheme developing. I think you'd have fun with this. Interested?

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

Ah, disaster capitalism at its finest. Yes, this could work as a subject, and it wouldn't make me sarcastic at all! Really, lol.

I was also thinking about firefighters beating back ever more horrific blazes. Their suits are loaded with PFAS. That doesn't annoy me at all.

elba's avatar

Just look at medical equipment.....

Whatever tickles your fancy , tho I'd go for the most extensive exposure version (and opportunity for sarcasm). Just keep me posted. . Cheers, E

elba's avatar

Sure - let me ask team for preferences

elba's avatar

Sorry, I should've asked what your specialty is! But if you have no preference, options could be the bloody awful PFAS etc - the forever chemicals. Or, the latest industry brainstorm, "the circular plastics economy". You could have fun with that- I have.

Several people requested the post not be in their 'territory' so we'll keep our human health focus, and a botanist says please lay off plants...

Let me know what you decide. No rush, and doesn't have to be particularly long. Cheers, E

Geoffrey Deihl's avatar

My "specialty" is climate change, but the more one pulls at that thread, the more tangled the ball becomes. Plastic and PFAS are certainly in play since all of it originates with our friends in Big Oil. Anything regarding overshoot is game for me. Climate change is just the most widely known aspect of that as is plastic, one of the "novel entities." Novel entity. Sounds so benign, eh?

elba's avatar

Oh, or you could share your views about the Cleveland Clinic article you linked to...i.e.how to protect yourself from nasty chemicals....???

Keith's avatar

Too true. The only revolution we can make is to stop work. Will the apes awaken? 🙈

If you read the caption you will understand why.
