“With fear for our democracy, I dissent.” —Justice Sonya Sotomayor
When I started writing about the climate emergency three years ago, I had little idea I would write about the potential end of democracy as well, but here we are. The Not So Supreme Court has ruled again, clearing the path for a psychopath who incited an insurrection on national television, a traitor, to run unimpeded for the presidency. Should he be reelected, he will get all charges against him dropped, weaponize the DOJ and FBI, free the January 6 insurrectionists and lock up or even execute all of his enemies, real or perceived in his addled brain. The Orange Felon declared vengeance, the same animal who bragged he could shoot somebody in Times Square and get away with it, refers to minorities as vermin, a convicted felon, and sex offender who told Howard Stern it’s okay to call his daughter “piece of ass.”
This situation is so absurd, so cartoonish, I feel as if I am living in a fictional satire, but it’s real, frightening, and ominous. I hope enough Americans understand what we’re poised to lose this November. Everything.
I could easily make the argument we’ve been living in a corporatocracy for decades now. That is what has led to this moment. I have witnessed democracy dying cut by cut. What’s coming if implemented is far worse.
Our political system is no longer of the people, for the people, and by the people. It is of the arms industry, for the lobbyists, and by AIPAC, the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Count dead Palestinians before you fall asleep if you don’t think that’s true. That’s where the interests of our elected leadership lies, in corporate and military might. They don’t care about you or me, it’s a zero-sum game, and peasants are always expendable, especially in an overpopulated world where resources are running out. While one party is undeniably more evil in its corruption and presents a clear and immediate danger, both have contributed to the rise of the billionaire class that really runs the show, monsters whose proof of superiority, lies in their ill-gotten money and power, evidence in their inflated minds of our inferiority and a drag on their sick vision of the future. We can be replaced by robots, the latest step being AI. It’s not subtle.
The conservative, no, renegade majority in this evil clown court, just six people on the planet, have turned the presidency into a position of unimpeded dictatorial power in their ruling Trump v. U.S., this after overturning Roe v. Wade, and criminalizing homelessness among other heinous decisions. This is a non-coincidental synergy with Project 2025 that seeks to turn the country into a minority rule Christian fascist state. If you or someone you love falls outside these narrow, fundamentalist lines, be prepared for the worst.
The decision of this court giving Trump immunity for his treasonous crimes seeks to put a climate change denier back in office who recently promised to unleash Big Oil if they will contribute $1 billion dollars to his campaign war chest, which will destroy the little progress we have made under Biden. Speaking of $1 billion, last year there were over twenty-eight climate change fueled disasters costing that, and this year already eleven as Category 5 hurricane Beryl rolled over Grenada’s Carriacou Island, and heads for Jamaica. Fueled by overheated ocean water from the burning of fossil fuels, it’s the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic ever.
Additionally, this specious court just overturned the 1984 Chevron doctrine, taking decision-making away from expert federal regulatory bodies and placing it in the hands of individual judges, further paving the path for destruction of the planet, our health and future to enact the far-right anti-human, anti-environmental agenda.
Child labor law rollbacks and abuses are on the rise in red states. Face it, we’re going to need your kids dying in meat packing plants like this one did after Trump deports all the illegals doing the dirty work for us now. And if you’re old? No worries, the far-right wants you to work until you die and snatch your Social Security and Medicare.
We are witnessing the culmination of a decades long coup d'état by an increasingly unpopular, minority party that stands for racism, greed, and enslavement. While I will never condone bigotry or racism of any kind, those that stormed the White House on January 6 have certain and justifiable fear and anger, but they misidentified the enemy. The enemy is the billionaires who have stolen the American Dream from all of us, liberal or conservative. The conservatives, aided by decades of lies by the likes of Rupert Murdock, Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones and numerous other players, have nearly destroyed our country.
Vote like this is your last election, because if you don’t, it will be.
Yes … vote … and after a Blue Wave is manifested in election night victories for Biden and Dems (millions of us are already working to make that happen … so that’s looking possible!) … Trump declares himself the winner (of course) and the AR-15 toting paramilitary incited by renegade General Mike Flynn, fascist propagandist Elon Musk thru “X”, Peter Thiel, Eric Prince, Roger Stone etc etc and financed by billionaires Leonard Leo and his mobster friends … guess who is “inaugurated”on Jan 20 … we have NO governmental institutions to protect us (DOJ& FBI are neutered, local police forces are waiting to fire their guns on pro-democracy protesters) and there is NO pro-democracy paramilitary as there was in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.
Of course — Never give up hope …. which is where exactly?
Thank you - I celebrated the 4th in a quiet, reflective way.I fear it I may be the last where freedom (though tested in horrible ways every day) might dissolve overnight, if Trump is elected.
I liked: "Nature teaches that complex, independent, overlapping systems provide resilience. " I believe this to be true and would point out Tragedy of the Commons. as a precept that has gotten us into this mess.
